Attending the LA Religious Education Congress

Los Angeles Religious Education Congress

Click on the title above and visit the site of the LA Religious Education Congress. I am joining 10 other sisters there for an exhibit, meetings with publishers, international liturgical celebrations and workshops. Over 40,000 catechists attend this Congress. I haven't been since 2003 - though that seems like yesterday to me and not yesteryear. We are hoping that the Congress will become a launching place for new Pauline editions, new Pauline authors, and Pauline singers. We are bringing the latest Pauline album of classical traditional Catholic songs via suitcase since it just arrived! Get your copy at the LA Congress or at your closest Pauline center. Not close enough? Visit the website: www.pauline.org - it should be up there soon. By the way I checked the 10 day forcast - I leave a snow-storm behind in Boston and head to sunny - in the 70s - LA.

Grace Hill Media

Grace Hill Media

Even from its inception, Grace Hill Media has always been a ground-breaking company. Jonathan Bock conceived of a new strategy to bridge the chasm that existed between Hollywood and the relatively untapped market of Religious America. In 2000, Grace Hill Media was born and quickly established itself as the reigning market leader in reaching People of Faith.

Grace Hill Media is committed to highlighting entertainment for the faith community which shares in their beliefs, that explores their values, and that enhances and elevates their view of the world. The hallmark of Grace Hill Media is integrity. We constantly balance the wants of our clients with the needs of our audience, and always strive to act as counsel and advocate for both. In recognizing the business demands of Hollywood, while remaining sensitive to the values of the faith audience, Grace Hill Media stands alone in the entertainment industry.

Grace Hill Media gave us (FSP) our first opportunity to work with movie theatres to promote a movie (The Nativity Story) with pre-screenings of the film. They also promote the Narnia films and so much more. Check out their web site and connect via e-newsletters for upcoming promotions that you can be a part of.

New foundation of Daughters of St. Paul in Juba

AFRICA/SUDAN - New foundation of Daughters of St. Paul in Juba
Juba (Agenzia Fides) - After 25 years of civil war, southern Sudan is experiencing a time of peace. Following a peace signing in January of 2005, Bishop Paris Taban, Bishop of Torit, offered an invitation to all religious congregations to come and start foundations there in order to aid in the moral and spiritual rebuilding of the inhabitants who, upon returning to their country have found ruins and desolation. The Daughters of St. Paul have accepted this invitation and last January 25th, two Pauline sisters went to Juba, willing to help the local Church in the evangelization and human aid efforts through communications media.
In Juba, houses have been destroyed, roads torn apart, very few buildings are left standing, and many people who, upon their return, have been forced to live in huts, even within the city. Throughout the city, there are buildings under construction. The Archbishop of Juba, Archbishop Paulino Lukubu, has offered the Daughters of St. Paul a hall in the cathedral, that also served as a bookstore. The hall is fairly large, although it will need repair, as well as an expansion and a storage room. What are most needed are books and audiovisual equipment. For now, the most urgent need is books for the seminarians, catechists and students, as well as for the common people. The arrival of the Daughters of St. Paul is not only awaited in Juba, but also in seven other dioceses of southern Sudan. The two missionaries are studying Arabic and are working to renovate the bookstore and the house in order to begin their apostolate with visits to the parishes and schools, bringing the Word of God to all the people. Less for Lent: Journey to Easter

This the title of a book that my sister and I began: Less for Lent, Add for Advent. This is what Cathy tells her kids. In reality we may also add for lent. The less for lent reminds us that giving means giving up something as an ascetical practice "to prepare us to receive" - the add tells us that in giving up we won't have less, instead we increase Jesus in us "He must increase while I must decrease," said St John the Baptist one of our guides. A Jesuit reminded us in his homily the first day of lent "Lent is 40 days - or 6 weeks. Easter is 7 weeks!" We are preparing to celebrate with joy the reason for our faith, our hope and our love. He is risen and is still with us!

Happy Lenten giving and adding

Media Mindfulness: New Bookfairs

This last week I was in Los Angeles to begin the first Institute of Media Literacy taught by Sr Rose Pacatte, fsp and a few invited presenters fluent in Media studies. There were six of us Daughters of St Paul present for the week and a half. Our objective? To obtain a certificate as Master/teachers in Media Literacy and to design six presentations for Catholic School students and teachers on this theme. It was a lot of work and a lot of films. I would recommend the course to everyone - but if you can't make the course come to the Cooperator Conference in Princeton, NJ this November 1, 2 and 3rd for a "taste of Media Lit" or we could call it "Media Lit Lite" since it is an introduction that will have you signing up for web classes in no time.
